Stories Archive: A update on the Whale that washed in at Island Beach state Park 8-30th 08
messages from GuppiePosted 9-01-08 @ 10:15 PM Update on the whale that washed in at IBSP.

Three dumpsters sit on the Paved road by area 23 @IBSP which has the whale that washed up at IBSP Saturday Morning, I guess the dept,Of N J DEP will be taken care of this situation.
It just sadens me a little , I have no Idea what will be done with the remains, just another sea mammal gone ---> Had to be a big one , WOW three dumpsters

Hi Guys and Gals.
I did some reserch on the whale that washed in, it was indeed a finwhale, not a humpback whale.
Younger whales are called Calfs, Some call them pups or babies, this whale if it were only 30 ', is was a young whale .
If this whale was not bigger then 30feet, it was just about a pup, read below .

hey Like I always say we are never to old to learn, I enjoy doing what I am doing , this helps me to understand the sea life more that I love so much.

Enjoy ! Fin Whale Statistics
Maximum length: 25m (82ft) males / 27m (89ft)
females, average 20m (66ft)
Adult weight: 50 tonnes average, but up to 130 tonnes
Life span: 90 years
Sexual maturity: 8-12 years
Gestation: 11-12 months
Birth length: 6-6.5m (20-21ft)
Birth weight: 2000kg (4400 lbs)
Dive duration: 20 mins
Distribution: all oceans, several genetically isolated stocks
Current world population: 85 000 / pre-whaling - 400 000

The Fin whale has the characteristic Rorqual's pleating of the throat region with anywhere from 50 to 100 pleats present that reach as far down as the navel (being mammals, whales have a tummy button). The baleen or whalebone is short, up to around 70cm long by about 30cm wide with from 260-480 plates on each side.

Ecology and Behaviour Fin whales are more sociable than the other rorquals often being found in small pods of 2-7 individuals (but rarely up to 20). This kind of behaviour is often associated with feeding techniques and it is likely that this is the reason. Fin whales are known to dive deeper than most baleen whales, to 200m again for feeding reasons. These behavioural characteristics and feeding behaviour add up to Fin whales occupying a different "niche" to the other large filter feeding whales and so allowing them to co-exist in similar regions as they feed on different types or sizes of food.

Like other large whales, the Fin's feed in the spring and summer at high latitudes in the Arctic or Antarctic and migrate towards warmer waters in the winter months. Fin whales swim about 90 miles (144 km) a day when migrating and have been tracked as travelling as much as 188 miles (300 km) in a single day - pretty impressive for something that travels through the most difficult medium of all - water.

Fin whales can swim at up to 30 mph (48 kmh) in short bursts when alarmed and at up to 18 mph (30 kmh) when migrating and cruising. Their swimming speed when feeding is much more
They often feed by swimming at the surface on their sides scooping up water and prey as they go, this is done on their right sides so that the white lower jaw and baleen are pointing downwards and may be the reason for this asymmetrical colouration. Though smaller than blue whales and not having quite the same prodigious appetite, Fin whales have been calculated as consuming as much as 2.8 tonnes of food a day while feeding in the Antarctic in the summer months.

Difference between a Hump Back Whale and a Fin Whale these are Dead Hump Backs ---->PhotobucketPhotobucket

These are Fin Whales ---->Photobucket

I read an artical that when Hump Backs whales are dead for days, they tend to blow up and the guts can explode.Yulkies.

OPERATION GAME THIEF
CALL TOLL FREE
1 (800) 222-0456
IT'S CONFIDENTIAL!
Stop Wildlife Crime

The Operation Game Thief phone number should be used only to report violations.

For all other law enforcement questions or information please write or call the main office or regional office nearest you. See our Contact Us page for contact information.

The poaching of game, the illegal shooting of protected species, the destruction and degradation of wildlife habitat, are all taking a toll on New Jersey's game and non game wildlife species. It poses a problem for the outdoor sportsmen and the conservationist. Wildlife crimes affect us all, whether we are hunters, anglers, bird watchers, or just like to walk in the woods and fields.

Law enforcement agencies do their best, but without the cooperation of the public their efforts cannot fully control the disregard some people have for our natural resources.

Involving YOU is what Operation Game Thief is all about. This program, sponsored by the New Jersey State Federation of Sportsmen's Clubs in close cooperation with the Division of Fish and Wildlife, seeks to enlist the help of all segments of the public in cracking down on wildlife crime.

You can make a difference and you can also be paid for your efforts.

Operation Game Thief, which is closely patterned after a very successful program in New Mexico offers rewards of up to $200 to persons who report certain types of wildlife crimes. The rewards are paid if the report results in the issuance of a summons.

Anonymity is guaranteed if desired. You are fully protected because no one, not even the person you speak with need ever know your name or address. Rewards are paid confidentially also.

OPERATION GAME THIEF CATEGORIES

1. Commercial exploitation of New Jersey's wildlife resources, including deer, striped bass, shellfish from condemned waters, undersized lobsters, fluke, crab pots, etc.
2. Flagrant violations concerning pheasants, trout, and other freshwater fish, ducks, quail, etc., including over limit netting and trapping, and the use of illegal traps.
3. Pollution of wildlife habitat.
4. Illegal dumping on state lands.
5. Negligent use of firearms, including the destruction of signs.
6. The illegal taking of deer, bear, bobcat, turkey and endangered species.

A minimum reward of $25 will be paid to informants for reporting violations in the above categories which result in a citation being issued. Rewards may be substantially higher depending upon the seriousness of the violation.

A minimum reward of $100 will be paid for the report of violations relating to deer poaching, illegal trapping and the taking of endangered species.

If you see or are aware of a violation, call the toll-free number 1-800-222-0456 and give as much information as possible.

If you desire to remain anonymous you will be assigned a code number of your own choosing. You will be told when to call back to find out the result of your tip. If your information leads to the issuance of a citation, you are eligible for a reward. Arrangements will be made for payment. (Law enforcement officers are not eligible for rewards.)

No one, not even the person you speak with on the phone needs to know your identity. Rewards payments can be made in untraceable bank money orders or in cash and delivered to you as per your instructions. YOU ARE FULLY PROTECTED.

The person who commits wildlife crime for whatever reason is a crook, a thief and a cheat who robs us all of not only our precious wildlife, but also our tax and license dollars. That person cheats us of our outdoor recreation and threatens future generations with diminished wildlife resources.

Help us help you. Don't make excuses for wildlife crime and don't tolerate poaching or other illegal activities among your hunting, fishing, or hiking companions. Report violations and help conserve our wildlife for others to enjoy while at the same time helping yourself.

The more information you can supply and the more specific you can be, the better the chances for apprehending the violator. Here are some things to look for:

  • Names, addresses, age(s) of suspects, along with as complete a description as possible.
  • Vehicle description and license plate number.
  • Type of violation - be specific - when and where it occurred.
  • Where is the contraband stored? How was it transported?
  • Report violations as promptly as possible. The quicker the information is received, the better the chances for an arrest.

REMEMBER, THE OPERATION GAME THIEF NUMBER CAN BE CALLED 24 HOURS A DAY, SEVEN DAYS A WEEK. 1-800-222-0456.

SUPPORT OPERATION GAME THIEF WITH A DONATION

Operation Game Thief is supported entirely through donations for sportsmen, conservation groups and businesses and others who care about the future of New Jersey's wildlife. Your donations are tax deductible. Please join with us in our efforts to stop wildlife crime.

  Stories Archive: Thank You All.
messages from GuppieTo my dear friends, Guppie & Grrumpys Bait & tackle staff.
I want to thank each and every one of you great fellow anglers for the wonderful get well card.
On my arrival home today there was a package on my door step, it was a wonderful and appetizing gift basket I received from all of you although I was not to surprised knowing that came from all the wonderful anglers I know.
It is one of the nicest gift baskets any one would want to have, knowing I am limited to fruits, I sure will enjoy this bunch of goodies.
I hope to see you all soon.

A BIG THANK YOU ALL.
